Secor Subaru of New London presented the Thames Valley Council for Community Action (TVCCA) with a check for $20,000 for its Meals on Wheels program on March 22 as part of Subaru’s yearly Share the Love fundraising event to benefit local charities. The reception and ceremony, hosted at the Garde Arts Center in New London in conjunction with the Breezeline Winter Cinema Series’ final movie event, drew a crowd of over 200 who attended the on-stage check presentation prior to the film.

It is often said that life is a journey. A piece of music, too, is a journey, one that holds up a mirror to life. The ECSO’s March 30 program explores this theme in works by Johannes Brahms, Gustav Mahler, Richard Strauss, and the neoclassical Italian composer Salvatore Di Vittorio, whose 2015 Sea Fanfare, based on a theme by Italian composer Claudio Monteverdi, who bridged the Renaissance and the Baroque eras, will open the concert.

The Garde Arts Center is pleased to present a group exhibition of new oil and watercolor paintings by three local artists with a reception on Saturday, January 20, 2024 from 1:30-3:00 pm. What makes this group exhibit unique is the artists are related. Sisters and oil painters Jacqueline Tedeschi and Katherine Diaz-Saavedra and their cousin, watercolorist Angela DeLaura will show original paintings and mixed-media pieces in the Garde’s main floor exhibit space In between the Mozart and the Beethoven on the program, the ECSO will be joined by harpists Colleen Potter Thorburn (former ECSO principal harp), a Virginia Commonweath University faculty member, and Jaclyn Wappel to present the Double Harp Concerto of Bill Marx. Marx is the adopted son of Harpo Marx and Susan Fleming, and became his father’s music arranger and conductor at age 16. Though Harpo, the non-speaking Marx Brother, did not read music, he eventually learned proper harp technique from celebrated Whose Live Anyway? “Henny: A Legacy of Hope”, a new documentary film created by Jerry Fischer and Todd Gipstein, will have its gala premiere on the giant screen of the Garde Arts Center in downtown New London on Thursday, February 29, 2024 at 7:30 pm. The evening will begin with live musical tributes by internationally acclaimed pianist Emanuel Ax, the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra (ECSO) and Chorus, and participating choirs from Colchester and New London.

The Breezeline Winter Cinema Series, celebrating twenty or more of the finest nominated and acclaimed films of 2023, will open at the Garde Arts Center’s historic movie palace at 325 State Street in downtown New London on Friday, January 19 at 7:30 pm with Maestro, the love story of America’s most famous conductor and composer Leonard Bernstein starring Bradley Cooper and Carey Mulligan and directed by Cooper.
The Maestro screening will include opening remarks by a student of Bernstein, Eastern This fall, the Chelsea Groton Foundation awarded $244,000 to 37 non-profit organizations from Connecticut and Rhode Island. In addition, the Foundation made its second $50,000 installment of its $250,000 Founding Partner commitment to the Chamber of Commerce of Eastern CT Innovation Center. This year, Chelsea Groton Bank and its Foundation provided more than $1,000,000 to non-profit organizations in our communities. The Foundation recently approved $405,820 in grants to 68 non-profit organizations from Connecticut and Rhode Island, which put the full year’s giving total above the $1 million mark for the first time ever. Earlier this year, the Foundation swiftly responded to support emergency relief efforts as well as needs across all giving categories in the wake of the pandemic, making the GivingTuesday, on December 1, is a day the world stops to give back to those non-profit organizations who contribute so much to their communities. Just today we received word that the State of Connecticut will be giving the Garde a matching grant of $182,800 for the more than $350,000 that was raised from the community in the last six weeks! Your generosity has helped save the theater, improving and The COVID Relief Fund for the Arts, administered by the Connecticut Office of the Arts (COA) within the Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD), was created to support arts nonprofits that
are performing arts centers, schools of the arts, or performing groups for whom grants will make a difference in terms of survival or rehiring; and have had to curtail operations for a period of time due to the COVID-19 pandemic and which have had limited ability to reopen due to pandemic restrictions Title IX: A Pop-Up by Bank Square Books will be opening in New London, CT for the holiday season. The 2019-2020 season continues with an exciting program that features a Grammy Award winner and timeless compositions. Edward Elgar’s concert overture In the South opens the program with a boisterous theme re-purposed from another work, that joyfully expresses his experiences with his family in Italy. The soloist for the evening is Grammy-winning guitarist Jason Vieaux. Vieaux performs Joaquín Rodrigo’s well known Concierto de Aranjuez.
“Perhaps the most precise and soulful classical guitarist of his Leap into your seat for this Leap Day concert featuring works by Mozart, Beethoven, and pieces and performers from Turkey. Throughout his career, Music Director and Conductor, Toshiyuki Shimada has visited Turkey to conduct many of the country’s leading orchestras. These collaborations have connected Toshi with some of the country’s most gifted artists. The evening opens with the orchestra performing Esintiler (Inspirations) a work by one of Turkey’s most beloved composers Ferit Tüzün. Soloists for the Kelli O'Connor, ECSO Principal Clarinetist to perform Artie Shaw's Clarinet Concerto.
The 2020 portion of the ECSO’s 19-20 season kicks off with a non-traditional pairing: the New London Big Band on the stage for the first time with the ECSO. Continuing the celebration of Music Director & Conductor Toshiyuki Shimada’s 10th anniversary, this concert presents a slate of national and local treasures. In recognition of Black History Month, the ECSO performs Concert Overture No. 2 by composer Florence Price. The Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra kicks off the 2019-20 season on Saturday, October 26, at 7:30 PM with “New Season – New World”, at the Garde Arts Center in New London. This opening concert features violinist, Solomiya Ivakhiv making her ECSO debut with Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto. The concert concludes with Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9 (From the New World).
The ECSO is partnering with the Terri Brodeur Breast Cancer Foundation to offer discounts for the opening concert to all walkers for their On September 22 at 2pm, enjoy a remarkable afternoon with the world's most famous sex therapist, Dr. Ruth Westheimer, as the launch of the Jewish Federation of Eastern Connecticut Annual Campaign. Dr. Ruth will advise the Garde audience and answer questions on issues concerning love, sex, and health, in no-nonsense and non-judgmental terms, all with a good dose of fun.

The Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra The Thames River Heritage Park will offer a special schedule for the hop-on hop-off water taxi service on Saturday, September 14 and Sunday, September 15, during the Connecticut Maritime Heritage Festival being held at Fort Trumbull and City Pier in New London.
The Water Taxi will operate continuous express water taxi service between Fort Trumbull and City Pier in New London and between Fort Trumbull and Thames River Landing in Groton from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Note: the new concert time is 7:30pm, and the pre-concert chats will begin at 6:30pm.The next ECSO concert will feature two long-time members; Stephan Tieszen, who has been Concertmaster for 30 years, and Thomas Green, Principal Bass of the ECSO for 25 years. Thomas Green is moving out of the area and has made a tremendous impact on both the ECSO and Ledyard Public Schools where New London, CT – The Thames River Heritage Park Foundation (TRHPF) has received a grant from the Panoram Foundation for $30,000 for operational support and the development of collaborative efforts among the 17 sites that comprise the Park experience. A collection of national and historic sites and institutions on both shores of the Thames River linked by a seasonal water taxi, the Thames River Heritage Park is the only heritage park in Connecticut and operates as a 501(C) 3 non-profit organization.
“The New London, CT – The Thames River Heritage Park (TRHP) is requesting proposals from licensed commercial tour boat operators to provide water taxi shuttle service and boat tours linking historic sites in the Thames River estuary Memorial Day weekend through mid-September 2019 - 2021. The operator would utilize the two US Navy Willard utility boats owned by the TRHP.

The ECSO gathers all of the artistic forces in our community for a joyous celebration of Leonard Bernstein’s 100th anniversary with a performance of his Broadway work, Candide. Bernstein himself was quoted as saying “there’s more of me in that piece than anything else I’ve done.”
Technically a comic operetta, Candide depicts Voltaire’s satirical novel of the same name. Opposing philosophies and ideologies are sung and Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra (ECSO) and Chorus announces a vacancy for the contractual position of Music Director/Conductor of the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Chorus (ECSC). The start date for this position will be July 2018. Highly qualified, experienced, choral conductors may apply. Interested candidates must submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, rehearsal and concert videos, three letters of recommendations, and a sample choral program for a holiday concert with a chamber orchestra, and a Speed PaintingThis Ease, an atmospheric work commissioned by the LA Chamber Orchestra from the accomplished composer Hannah Lash opens this February concert. Guido Garaycochea, co-founder of Expressiones Cultural Center in New London, CT, joins the ECSO as a speed painter during this work. Describing his artwork as “an abstraction of dire and lost dreams”, Guido will paint alongside the orchestra, finishing when the music ends. The Women’s Philharmonic Advocacy provides funding for This Ease.

Eastern CT – The Chamber of Commerce of Eastern Connecticut has announced that William “Bill” Stanley, Vice President of Development and Community Relations for Lawrence + Memorial Hospital/Yale New Haven Health, has been selected as the 2017 recipient of the William Crawford Distinguished Service Award. He will be honored at a dinner celebration on Pfizer’s Groton Laboratories will support 67 programs in Southeastern Connecticut, the greater New Haven area, and southern Rhode Island through its 2017 competitive grants program.
Priority was given to programs that bring science and math to students from elementary through high school. Additional awards were made for programs that provide for the underserved or to support local civic and cultural institutions.
